Shilton won’t meet Maradona without an apology

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton says he won’t meet Diego Maradona until the Argentina great apologises for his ‘Hand of God’ goal.

Maradona scored twice against Shilton in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, and the keeper has not forgiven the World Cup winner for punching the ball into his net.

Shilton has previously turned down the opportunity to meet Maradona in Dubai in 2012, and an invitation to a dinner in June extended by Maradona is yet to be replied to.

“Part of me thinks it’s time to call a halt to it all but the other side says I shouldn’t,” Shilton told The Sun.

“If I agreed to meet him then he would have to apologise, that is the bottom line.

“We were both captains on that day. I’ve never met him since. I wasn’t exactly dying to meet him. But it has been a long time now.”
