SHOCK HORROR: POGBA ISN’T LEAVING
It won’t shock you to learn that Manchester United won’t be selling Paul Pogba during this transfer window. How could they, when they have no opportunity to replace him and have already annoyed Jose Mourinho by not getting all the players that he wants.
The latest update is that Barcelona will not move for Pogba, and we have quotes from director Ariedo Braida: “I don’t think we’re going to move for Pogba, but he’s a great player.”
However, you can read between the lines on this. If Barcelona thought that there was any chance of being able to sign Pogba, they would be all over it. Them saying that they aren’t going to move is proof that they don’t believe a deal can be done.
MIGNOLET OFF TO NAPOLI
The lovely Matthew Stead has collated all those Premier League players who were left out of their team’s matchday squad on the opening weekend, and Simon Mignolet was most certainly one. When a large section of your supporters want to sell one of the club’s goalkeepers and you still find yourself behind him in the pecking order, you have a problem.
The Sun say that Mignolet is off to Napoli after their No. 1 Alex Meret broke his arm. We even have quotes from Mignolet’s agent:
“We are in discussions with Napoli, but there is no agreement yet. In the end it is in their interest to find a solution.
“Liverpool want to keep Simon, but he wants to play in matches – and he should. He deserves to play for a big club. Simon is the best option for Napoli in terms of quality, even though there is a financial aspect to it.”
Mignolet is going to end up being Napoli’s No. 2, but it’s still better than being left out of the squad every week.
MOURINHO WANTS FRINGE PLAYERS TO STAY
No surprise here. Having been told that he needed to sell players before the club would buy him anyone new, Mourinho sat back and watched as Manchester United failed to sell or buy in the final weeks of the window. So now he sees no reason to sell anyone.
Two players who were expected to leave Old Trafford this summer are Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo, a third-choice right-back and fifth-choice central defender. Darmian did play in the first league game of the season, but only because Antonio Valencia isn’t match-fit yet and Diogo Dalot is injured.
However, Mourinho has reportedly told United that he doesn’t want to lose either until January at least, because he is worried about the lack of depth in his squad.
