Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claims the treble is “more or less impossible” to achieve in the modern game, and insists it is a mistake to “underrate the FA Cup”.

Liverpool’s hopes of winning the three major competitions on offer were dashed as Jurgen Klopp’s side were dumped out of the FA Cup by Chelsea on Tuesday.

And Solskjaer claims the FA Cup run from his 1999 treble winning side – and the semi-final victory over Arsenal in particular – was the “turning point” in their season.

“Well, for me it was a fantastic final to play in in ‘99 and it’s always been the last game of the season, a spectacle, you can never ever underrate the FA Cup how much it means and for us it was a big step towards.

OPINION: This Liverpool stutter has made minor winners of us all…

“The semi-final against Arsenal, that was maybe the turning point. The Treble was a fantastic achievement.

“We hope we’re gonna do it again but it’s a difficult task and more or less impossible, there are so many good teams around, it has changed domestically, it was either us or Arsenal in ‘99 and now there’s more of us.”
