Graeme Souness believes Mason Mount is “top class” and has proved the Chelsea fans, who apparently doubted him, wrong with his perfoamances.
Mount put in a classy display at Elland Road on Wednesday night as Chelsea brushed Leeds aside 3-0 to all but secure Champions League football next season.
The England international opened the scoring with a brilliant finish into the top corner, before setting up Christian Pulisic for the second of the game.
Mount has had his doubters, mainly fans of other clubs, but Souness claimed it was the Chelsea supporters who have been proved wrong by the 23-year-old’s consistent quality.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness said: “What a boy this is. I think he’s top class.
“I remember a couple of years ago the Chelsea supporters doubting him. There’s nothing to doubt about him.
“He’s energetic, he’s a workaholic, he’s got great skills, an eye for a goal and eye for a killer pass – he’s just a top player at such a young age.”
Despite a positive evening for Thomas Tuchel and his side, one negative was the injury to Mateo Kovacic, who was forced off with an ankle problem after Daniel James’ reckless challenge and resulting red card.
And Tuchel said it is “unlikely” the midfielder will return for the FA Cup final on Saturday.
“I tell you not as an expert, but for me it is very unlikely,” Tuchel added.
“He has a swollen ankle and is in a lot of pain. I am not a doctor and we need to wait for the examinations, but it looks very unlikely that he can play.
“It’s absolutely bad news for us, of course, on a perfect evening. If he misses it I’m very disappointed, because he was a clear starter, He’s a key figure for us.
“He’s super, super hungry and determined and excited to play in these matches and is in fear now that he will miss it.
“We will see. We need to wait. Maybe we will have a miracle and we make it possible.”
