‘Special, very special’- Jones speaks out about winning Premier League

Manchester United defender Phil Jones

Phil Jones has revealed what winning the Premier League with Manchester United in 2013 meant to him as the club look to repeat the feat this season.

Jones was part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s final title winning squad during the 2012/2013 season, making 17 appearances in the league.

The 29-year-old is yet to make an appearance so far this season and only made two last year as a result of a number of injury problems.

However, he is now back fit and in training as he looks to move up the central defensive ranks at Old Trafford. Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly are all currently ahead of Jones in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans.

United are looking to end a Premier League title drought that runs back to the aforementioned 2013 triumph, but with the signings of Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Red Devils will be hoping to bring the title back to Old Trafford.

Now, Jones, speaking on the UTD Podcast, has revealed what winning the league title meant to him: “Special, very special.

“I go back to it, as a kid, if you’d have told me I’d win the Premier League with Man United… There’s some things I get, a lot of players win the Premier League these days, but there’s so many players that were good players who will never come close to winning the Premier League. And to win the Premier League, to have that on your CV [is huge].”

United clinched the title against Aston Villa eight years ago, with Jones reminiscing on what that occasion was like.

“I remember the game, I remember being in the hotel the night before we played Villa on a night game and it didn’t matter who we were going to play, we’d win.

“We were just itching to play the game. It gives you goosebumps just now thinking about the fans when Wazza [Wayne Rooney] plays the ball over to Robin [van Persie] and he volleyed it into the net, and Old Trafford just erupted, and it was a crazy feeling at such a young age to win the Premier League.”
