Sprockel, a Dutch central defender, has put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Sky Bet League 2 club.
The 32-year-old, who has most recently represented Othellos in Cyprus, and has previously had spells at Feyenoord, Excelsior, CSKA Sofia and Vitesse Arnhem, impressed the Magpies’ recruitment panel last week in friendly matches against Leeds and Scunthorpe.
“I’ve been happy with the trial,” Sprockel told the club’s official website.
“You want to play good and give a good impression but I’m supported by the players in everything, because I know the players now I’m at home earlier and I’m happy to be here.
“I’m experienced, I try to play simple football, one or two touches and as far as possible from the goal.”
“I want to play as high as possible, like in the Premier League but this isn’t an easy level and you need to be focused and fit.”
