Spurs to demand £27m for Bergwijn with Ajax interested
Ajax are reportedly planning to offer Steven Bergwijn a route out of north London by submitting a bid for the Spurs winger.
Bergwijn joined to much fanfare in January 2020 but has failed to light up the Premier League.
In his first full season with Spurs, he managed just one goal in 21 league games.
The Greening of Football: It’s time for some serious changes
According to the Daily Mail, Spurs want to recoup all of the £27million they paid for Bergwijn, should Ajax produce a formal bid.
The Dutch giants remain convinced on the talents of the 23-year-old winger, despite his troubles in recent months.
He could be taken to Amsterdam this summer to help them prepare for another Eredivisie title defence in 2021/22.
The report states that Bergwijn might be up for a transfer due to his situation with the Holland national team.
The player made Frank De Boer’s provisional Euro 2020 squad but was cut prior to the tournament.
He now wants to gain regular first team football in an attempt to turn his fortunes around for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Spurs, however, are unwilling to sanction a move currently. They want to wait until a new manager is signed before letting the winger leave.
The most likely option is Nuno Espirito Santo, who is a free agent after opting to end his stay at Wolves.
Nuno could have use for Bergwijn next term, so the player’s future now rests upon the conclusion of his club’s manager search.
Bergwijn began the recent campaign as a substitute under Jose Mourinho. His best form came in January, when he registered three assists in successive games against Leeds, Sheffield United and Liverpool.
However, his place in the squad was pretty much gone by the time of Mourinho’s dismissal on April 19.
Interim boss Ryan Mason gave him slightly more opportunities in the final few games. That allowed him to register his first goal of the campaign on the penultimate day against Aston Villa.
Bergwijn spent six years with Ajax’s famed academy before signing for rivals PSV in 2011.
He was promoted to their first team four years later and made 149 appearances for the club, scoring 31 goals.
His impressive performances then earned him his £27million move to the Premier League.
