Premier League side Spurs are thinking about making a shock bid for Watford midfielder Will Hughes, according to reports.

Hughes was spoken of as a Premier League prospect ever since making his Derby breakthrough in 2011 as a 16-year-old.

187 appearances for the Rams later, Watford decided to give Hughes his chance in the Premier League as he made the move for around £8m.

Hughes played 30 times in the Premier League last season for Watford as they were relegated to the Championship and now the Daily Mirror claims that the Hornets ‘are facing a battle to keep hold of their best players this summer’.

Hughes, who is understood be rated at £13m by Watford, ‘has emerged as a target’ for Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho as he looks to put his mark on the Spurs squad.

Mourinho is ‘considering a surprise move’ for the former England under-21 international but ‘he needs to balance the books’ first.

Paulo Gazzaniga, Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier and Danny Rose could all be sold this summer to provide Mourinho with funds to further improve his side.

The report adds that Hughes ‘is seen as a good option given he can operate in a number of roles across midfield and would boost Tottenham’s homegrown quota.’
