Stam likens new signing Fernandes to Man Utd legend
Jaap Stam thinks new Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes is a “bit similar” to club legend Paul Scholes.
The 25-year-old signed a five-and-a-half-year contract in January, with the option of a further 12-month extension, in a deal worth an initial £46.6m from Sporting Lisbon, which could rise to £67m.
Fernandes produced an excellent individual performance in Man Utd’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday after making his debut the week before in a 0-0 draw at home to Wolves.
And after witnessing his first two matches, Stam reckons new Man Utd signing Fernandes is like Scholes in some ways.
“I think Fernandes is a bit similar to Scholesy,” said Stam.
“He’s always looking to play forward.
“He’s got the ability to score. He’s got a great free-kick. He’s got a great pass. He is always looking to get into certain areas to get onto the ball and be influential in the game.
“He’s not exactly the same. Scholesy was a bit more aggressive without the ball. But in football intelligence he is similar to Paul Scholes.”
