The Saddlers took a second-minute lead in Saturday’s League One clash at Brunton Park when Darren Byfield latched on to Julian Gray’s through-ball and skipped clear of the defence.
Although Cumbrians keeper Adam Collin partially blocked the striker’s shot, the ball bobbled into the net for Byfield’s 10th goal of the campaign.
Carlisle drew level in the 29th minute when Gary Madine flicked on Adam Clayton’s pass, giving Jason Price the opportunity to break into the penalty area and coolly beat keeper Rene Gilmartin with a low shot from 12 yards.
Half-time substitute Mark Hughes, on for Clayton McDonald, rescued Walsall when he stole in ahead of Madine to stop the Carlisle striker getting on the end of Evan Horwood’s cross.
Byfield continued to be Walsall’s dangerman and Collin needed two attempts to field a low effort from the forward after he had escaped the attentions of Ian Harte.
