Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a ligament strain to the finger during the draw with Barcelona.

The 25-year-old Poland international, on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal, was forced off five minutes into the second half in the Group E opener at the Stadio Olimpico after clashing with Barca striker Luis Suarez.

A statement from the Italian club on Thursday read: “Tests have confirmed that Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny did not sustain a fracture to the fourth finger of his left hand against Barcelona last night, despite having to come off injured in the second half after a clash with Luis Suarez.

“This morning’s tests did reveal that Szczesny, who is on loan from Arsenal and has started all four of Roma’s competitive games this season, suffered a ligament strain to the finger.

“It is estimated that Szczesny, who has so far made 23 appearances for the Polish national side, will be out for between four and six weeks.”

The score was 1-1 when Szczesny departed, and that was how it finished – ending European champions Barcelona’s perfect start to the campaign.

Suarez had given Luis Enrique’s side a 21st-minute lead, only for Roma to equalise eight minutes later with a wonder goal from defender Alessandro Florenzi.
