Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has identified the area where Anthony Martial can improve his game in the second half of the season.

The French forward has scored three league goals for United this season in just 462 minutes of football. He has also provided two assists.

Martial has looked good when playing under Ten Hag, but his injury record is clearly an issue. Since arriving at Old Trafford, Martial has had a series of different injuries.

When asked about the 27-year-old, Ten Hag delivered his verdict on where he would like to see him improve.

Ten Hag told reporters (via Manchester Evening News): “He is not constantly injured, he is playing games. He has to work on that. On that fact, I agree. He has to be more available and he can’t do nothing for it in that sense and sometimes it’s also bad luck.

“But sometimes you don’t know what the reason behind it is. But when he is there, he is really important for us because we play our best football when he is available.

“He has to be aware of that as well. So if we want to be successful, we need him. First thing is, he has to be available.”

The United boss was asked if Martial lacked the mentality to constantly make himself available, but Ten Hag doesn’t see it that way.

He added: “I don’t want to set that conclusion. What I said: no one is the same. I can’t see and I can’t point what it is because if I had I would work on that process to get it turned around.”

Across all competitions, Martial has scored five goals this season. He is averaging a goal every 125 minutes under Ten Hag which is massively impressive.

Next up for Man United is a test against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg. The manager is raring to win his first trophy with United.

He added: “It’s about that, it’s about winning trophies, so we have a good opportunity but we have to go game from game, now we play Forest two legs, so focus on the first leg, don’t think further ahead because that will distract and so the aim for tomorrow is win that game.

“It’s a long time ago United played there [The City Ground]. I think we like that. When fanatic audience is nice to play for, it will be a good atmosphere and I think it will motivate the players and we have to get ready for that.

“It’s the best feeling you can have, winning a trophy and I have the luck in my career to win some trophies and it’s magnificent, especially for the fans.

“It’s so great and I think the fans here have some experience, especially the older ones, but in this period, Manchester United didn’t win trophies and it’s too long ago. We are aware of that fact and we have to do it again.”
