Ten Hag says Manchester United ‘must wait’ for Shaw injury update
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw hobbled off after 37 minutes in last night’s 1-0 win against Brentford.
Shaw has been known to be injury prone, and the Red Devils will be hoping that the injury is nothing to serious.
United head coach Erik Ten Hag said the club will need to wait to get a full account of the injury.
Speaking to MUTV after the match, he said: “In this moment, I can’t give something about it because we have to wait for 24 hours.”
The Dutch coach confirmed the assessment in his press conference later on.
He added: “I can’t say in this moment. I wait for tomorrow what is the diagnosis. I took him straight off and didn’t want to risk [it]. But we have to wait for the outcome.
“Then you can make the right diagnosis. So I don’t want to comment in this moment.”
The Victory against Brentford marked Shaw’s 250th appearance for Manchester United since joining in 2014, and the win saw his team leapfrog Spurs into 4th place.
England international Shaw signed a new contract with United on Tuesday, keeping him at the club for another four years.
“Nine years ago, I signed for this amazing club, and I’m thrilled to be extending my stay,” the 27-year-old told manutd.com.
“I’ve grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player; I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this.
“We’re at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We’ve been successful already this season, but we want much more. There’s a great opportunity to create something special here, and I’m going to give everything to be part of that.”
Manchester United have enjoyed a rebirth of form under new coach Erik Ten Hag, and won their first trophy since 2017 when they claimed the League Cup in February.
Shaw has been a crucial part of Ten Hag’s plans, being used as both a left-back and left sided centre-back.
Ten Hag praised Shaw after he signed his new contract this week, he said: “I think it’s a good message [that he’s here for his peak years]. An England international, he’s doing really well this season, really happy with him.
“I think he’s a modern left full-back but can also play other positions like left centre-back. He matches absolutely the standards we want to have, so a very good message.”
Both Shaw and Ten Hag will be desperate for good news on the defender’s injury, with crucial games Europa League games against Sevilla in the next few weeks.
