Former Chelsea captain Terry aims dig at Tottenham amid rumours that Man Utd want to sign Kane
Former Chelsea captain John Terry says Harry Kane is “clearly not going” to win trophies at Tottenham amid Man Utd transfer rumours.
The England international has been in good form again this season for Spurs, bagging 12 goals in 15 Premier League matches and helping Antonio Conte’s side to fourth in the table.
There have been numerous rumours over the past few years that Kane could move to another club with Tottenham failing to match his ambitions.
A Spanish publication has even claimed that Man Utd – who agreed to mutually terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract earlier this week – could make a move for Kane in the January transfer window, which seems like a non-starter, but Terry thinks the Tottenham striker needs to leave.
Terry told beIN Sports: “I think Harry Kane has got ambitions to go and win trophies – he’s clearly not going to do that at Tottenham is he? Let’s be honest. He’s not, clearly. Let’s be honest with ourselves.
“He’s one of the best strikers in the world. He wants to win trophies. He wants to play for the best and biggest teams.
“Spurs are not that, Spurs are not going to give him what he wants. He wants to finish his career with some trophies.”
On whether Kane could join a prestigious club like Real Madrid, Terry added: “I could see it.”
And Terry’s former team-mate at Chelsea, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, thinks that the Blues should make a move for Kane.
Hasslebaink told Grosvenor Casinos: “I would have done Ronaldo for Chelsea in the summer, for one year, but obviously now I think the priorities are bigger in the summer.
“I would try to persuade Kane to come. That would be a very controversial move, but surely he’s going to want to win things. Surely he knows he’s not going to win with Spurs.
“Surely, he’s not enjoying the way he is playing at the moment and where he’s playing. I know they’re all doing the shift for the team, but the majority of the time, when they don’t have the ball, he’s 10 meters away from his own box.
“You know, so surely he’s not going to want to be playing like that for the next two or three years.
“Surely he would want to be with the club that is going to go for it and is going to try to win trophies or are going to be closer to winning the trophies, so for me, they should go for him.”
A Man Utd move for Kane would please Teddy Sheringham with the former striker claiming the Red Devils need a centre-forward rather than another “flitty” forward like PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo.
“Man United do not need another flitty player like Gakpo in their ranks,” Sheringham told BoyleSports.
“We need a centre-forward who can lead the line now that [Cristiano] Ronaldo has gone. We need a focal point for the team to hit and who can bring players into play.
“We cannot go for another technical player who can play as a winger or a false nine. We already have so many of those in [Anthony] Martial, [Marcus] Rashford and [Jadon] Sancho and right now it’s a bit of a detriment to be honest.”
