Thiago-esque ‘one-off’ needed for Klopp to reconsider Liverpool plan – £103m man is ‘the one’

Liverpool will reportedly not sign a new midfielder this summer unless they are presented “with something that’s just too good to turn down”.

Dean Jones is the reporter guilty of stating the bloody obvious, here.

It is clear to see that Liverpool are at the weakest in the centre of midfield, but they have proved in recent years that they do not panic in the transfer window. Signing Ben Davies from Preston last year was very out of character, mind.

It is no secret that Liverpool have earmarked Jude Bellingham as their dream midfield signing.

He really is a special talent and Borussia Dortmund have made it clear that the 19-year-old is valued at £103m.

But with Erling Haaland already moving on this summer, Dortmund are against letting Bellingham leave before 2023.

Liverpool’s dodgy start to the 2022/23 season has led to fresh calls for them to act in the transfer market now.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are without a win in three games, with their 2-1 loss to Man Utd being more concerning than draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace.

After signing Darwin Nunez, Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho, Jones has suggested that Liverpool will not sign another midfielder than Bellingham unless a transfer comes up that is impossible to ignore, a la when Thiago joined them for £20m in 2020:

“It’s kind of ridiculous that they are having to even play James Milner and Harvey Elliott then decide who else can fit in there,” Jones said on The Deal Done Show.

“So it’s a strange one, but obviously, the players that Liverpool would look to sign in that position aren’t available at the moment, and they’re not just going to sign someone for the sake of it.

“Thiago was kind of a one-off when he came in because Klopp identified him at the time. He didn’t think they really needed him, but he was like, ‘we can get this player’ and they got him through the door.

“Jude Bellingham would be the one that Liverpool would really want in this area of the field. There’s no doubt that they are waiting for Jude Bellingham’s situation to open up, and that is not happening at the moment.

“Because of that, Jurgen Klopp’s going to be patient, I think, and just wait for that to happen – unless he’s presented with something that’s just too good to turn down in these last few days of the window.”
