‘This result was coming’ – Shaw reacts to Man Utd’s hurtful loss to Liverpool
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has suggested that their heavy defeat to Liverpool “was coming” as they have not been at their best.
The left-back was in the starting eleven against Liverpool on Sunday. A torrid first half ended with them 4-0 down thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah and goals from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota.
Salah completed his hat-trick in the second half and Paul Pogba was sent off as Man Utd finished the game with 10-men.
It’s open season on ‘Wally’ Gunnar Solskjaer…
The Red Devils are now winless in four Premier League games. They have dropped down to seventh in the table.
Their next two league games are against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. They also face Arsenal and Chelsea in the next few years.
As reported by The Athletic, Shaw said after the defeat that United have not been at their best for past few games:
“Like I said, I think it’s ourselves that we need to look at, first and foremost, in the mirror,” Shaw said.
“Are we doing everything right and preparing right for the games in ourselves?
“Of course we have the tactics and how the manager wants us to play. But I think at times we’re way too easy to play against.
“I think, for example, you look at the first goal, it can’t be possible that they can have sort of three running through in the first five minutes. We need to be more compact, we need to be better and we know that.
“I think also maybe we can say this result was coming.
“I think in past games where we’ve won, we haven’t been at our best and we know that.
“We felt that inside the dressing room. Today we need to reflect and we have to move on from this because it hurts.”
Elsewhere, Graeme Souness has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo is causing Man Utd a “major problem”:
“Can I start off by saying how many people can sit in a room and say they’ve been the best player in the world, or the best ever, he can genuinely have that conversation with anybody that’s kicked a ball.
“In terms of him making them a better team, no. I think Manchester United have a major problem now.
“They have to play a way Ole doesn’t want to play. If you’re pressing, you can only press when every single player takes part and he won’t do that. So they can’t be that high pressing team that Liverpool are, that Manchester City are. That many of the best teams are playing right now.
“He will score goals and excite the crowd, but I don’t think you can start every single game with him. Liverpool will be able to get out at Manchester United, I imagine. They will be able to pass their way out from the back – and that will cause United a problem.”
