Major Liverpool target whittles choice down to two options

Timo Werner is ‘flattered’ by interest from Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid but will choose between joining Liverpool and staying at Leipzig.

Werner was regarded as Liverpool’s primary transfer target heading into this summer before the global pandemic curtailed football in Europe’s major leagues.

The Bundesliga will be the first to return this weekend, with Timo Werner hoping to fuel Leipzig’s unlikely title challenge.

They are third, five points behind Bayern Munich, and have nine games to close the gap.

Werner will be hoping to catch rival Robert Lewandowski in the top goalscorer stakes, as his 21 goals has thus far been eclipsed by the Pole’s 25.

Liverpool are sure to be among the teams keeping a close eye on Germany’s return to action as their interest in Werner has not waned, and that feeling is mutual with the player himself.

The Athletic claim that the German’s future ‘is quite straightforward’ as he either wishes to join Liverpool this summer or stay at Leipzig for one more year before reassessing his options in 2021.

Werner had spoken to United and Barcelona, while his representatives were contacted by Chelsea, earlier this year, and while he is ‘flattered by such admiration from sides he holds in the highest regard’, the only club he will consider joining is Liverpool.

David Ornstein suggests that is down at least four factors: ‘the coach, team-mates, playing style and environment’.

But Werner sees Liverpool as ‘the best fit’, and the Reds ‘deem him exceptional value for money’.

They have reportedly sworn off major transfers this summer but could use their ‘good relationship’ with Leipzig and the many convoluted release clauses in Werner’s contract to eventually land him.
