Tottenham secure £43m centre-back transfer as Fabrizio Romano details next steps for Spurs
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Tottenham have agreed to sign Micky van de Ven for £43million plus add-ons, with the centre-back set to travel for his medical over the next day.
Spurs have seemed eager to recruit in the heart of the defence throughout the summer. Van de Ven and Edmond Tapsoba have been two of their main targets in the window so far.
The last report on Van de Ven, from transfer insider Romano, suggested the north London outfit were “waiting for the final green light” from Wolfsburg.
It seems they’ve now got that, as Romano has issued an update with his famous “here we go”, stating there is a “verbal agreement in place” over the deal.
It’ll see Van de Ven join for approximately £43million initially, plus unspecified add-ons. Romano also states that the Dutchman will sign until 2028.
Wolfsburg will reportedly prepare the documents so that the deal can be officially completed soon, with the defender set to travel to undertake his medical “in the next 24hr”.
The signing of Van de Ven gives Ange Postecoglou another option to choose from in the defence. After Spurs conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season, shoring things up will be important.
He might soon be joined by another exciting centre-back at the club, too. Indeed, the aforementioned Tapsoba has been alongside Van de Ven in terms of potential additions to the backline at Tottenham.
It was recently reported the north London outfit were preparing an offer of around £39million for the Burkina Faso international – a rise on their previous offer.
They might well have a new partnership at the back if their offer is successful. It’ll give Postecoglou a good start at his new club, knowing he’s got the tools to turn around a poor season before he joined, when Tottenham missed out on European football, finishing eighth in the Premier League.
That Spurs don’t have European football could help them to blood the new talents in a less high-pressure atmosphere and figure out if they are ready for a starting spot immediately.
