Tottenham deal now ‘advanced’ after Barcelona are forced to give in on price demands
Tottenham are reportedly ‘advancing’ in negotiations to sign Clement Lenglet, with Barcelona now willing to accept a cut-price transfer fee.
The France international spent last season on loan with Spurs and put in some decent performances but they were not prepared to pay the Catalan’s €12m (£10.3m) price tag initially.
Now, Tottenham could end up signing Lenglet for a relatively cheap fee, as Ange Postecoglou looks to bring in more defensive options.
Tottenham are currently in negotiations with two Bundesliga centre-backs: Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.
Interestingly, they recently joined the race for Chelsea youngster Levi Colwill, too. So Postecoglou clearly wants to bring in more than one centre-back.
However, it seems Tottenham could come back in for Lenglet, with negotiations with Barcelona now moving in the right direction.
This is according to Spanish outlet Sport, who claim that Barcelona are ‘working against the clock’ to secure several exits.
The Catalans are still in the midst of a financial crisis and need to sell players before they buy this summer. One of the players named in the report is Lenglet.
Previous reports suggest that Tottenham had hoped Barcelona would allow the 28-year-old to leave on a free transfer. This is despite him having three years left on his contract.
This came just after Barcelona rescinded Samuel Umtiti’s contract, so Spurs hoped for the same with Lenglet.
Unfortunately for them, that never materialised. Nevertheless, they may still be able to land the defender on a cut-price deal this summer.
Sport add that Lenglet’s move to Tottenham is ‘being advanced a lot’ and there is optimism a deal can be agreed.
Also, Barcelona allegedly ‘know they will have to give in’ and accept a low fee for the Frenchman this summer. This will be pleasing to Daniel Levy, who has been negotiating the transfer for some time.
At Tottenham last season, Lenglet made 35 appearances across all competitions. In the process, he helped the London club to seven clean sheets and scored one goal.
Lenglet often found himself behind the likes of Cristian Romero and Eric Dier in the pecking order but clearly did enough to convince Postecoglou that he can be an asset to Spurs.
He won’t be the last centre-back Tottenham sign this summer, though, with deals for Van de Ven and Tapsoba still progressing.
