Tottenham line up exciting Prem midfield pair as replacement for star who’s close to ditching club

Tottenham are reportedly interested in both Douglas Luiz and Conor Gallagher, as there have been ‘positive developments’ in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leaving the club.

Spurs are likely to be quite active during the summer transfer window. They’ve already signed James Maddison, Guglielmo Vicario and Manor Solomon, as well as bringing Dejan Kulusevski back permanently.

Those snares highlight new boss Ange Postecoglou’s desire to improve the squad that he inherited after an eighth-placed finish last term. It seems he’s soon to lose a fixture of the side of late in Hojbjerg, who’s angling for a move to Atletico Madrid.

As such, Spurs are on the hunt for a replacement midfielder, and have landed on Luiz from Aston Villa and Gallagher from Chelsea, as per the Daily Mail.

It’s suggested the Premier League experience of both players should be an attractive asset as Tottenham look to replace a player who has made more than 200 top-flight appearances since first playing in England.

It might be soon that they’re moving to replace Hojbjerg, given there have been ‘positive developments’ in talks regarding agreeing a fee with Atletico for the midfielder of late, hence why they’ve identified potential replacements.

There’s no indication of how much money Spurs would raise from that sale at this point. However, a previous report surrounding their interest in Gallagher suggested Chelsea would want £40million to see him go.

It would not be a surprise if Hojbjerg was to command a similar fee, so they may be able to put the money from his sale directly towards his replacement.

Indeed, that would suggest Chelsea don’t have a problem with selling Gallagher, despite a host of midfielders having already left Stamford Bridge this summer.

It’s unclear whether Luiz would become available if Tottenham were to pursue him. The Brazilian was one of Aston Villa’s best players last season: he scored six goals and assisted a further six as he missed just one league game.

Given the Villans secured European football, and have turned down bids for the midfielder in previous transfer windows before having that luxury, it would be a surprise if they were to allow him to leave this summer.

Gallagher may be the easiest midfielder to pursue, but it remains to be seen whether or not that is the case; perhaps the Blues signing Moises Caicedo could help Spurs.
