Tottenham historian blames Gazza for denting famous Cock
Paul Gascoigne was to blame for denting Tottenham’s ‘iconic Golden Cockerel’.
Tottenham have confirmed that a replica of the famous club symbol will adorn the club’s new stadium when it opens.
The original first adorned White Hart Lane in 1909, and was removed from the old East Stand for maintenance in the late 1980s.
An exact replica will ‘take pride of place above the South Stand’ of the new stadium – meaning the dents left by Gazza and his air rifle will be there too.
“The Cockerel was falling apart,” club historian John Fennelly recalls of when the original was taken in for maintenance.
“It was dented and in pretty poor condition.
“The story was the dents had been caused in the Blitz. But the truth was the damage was done by Gazza – with an air rifle.
“He tried to deny it but he’d been spotted.”
Not the first story of Gascoigne and a c*ck you’ll hear today.
