Tottenham make ‘great offer’ for Man Utd man in Postecoglou’s ‘first objective’; Maddison twist
Tottenham have reportedly made an offer to Manchester United for Harry Maguire as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of next season.
Spurs announced the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager at the beginning of this month and they are now looking to bring in the players he wants over the summer.
One player who has been linked is Maguire with the Man Utd captain likely to leave Old Trafford this summer after dropping down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman’s preferred centre-back partnership is Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane with Luke Shaw even filling in ahead of Maguire over the last 12 months.
Aston Villa and Newcastle United have also been credited with interest in Maguire but Spanish publication Fichajes insist that Tottenham have now made a ‘great offer’ for the Man Utd defender.
They describe the England international as Postecoglou’s ‘first objective’ in the transfer market with his ‘days numbered at Manchester United’.
Man Utd are actively ‘looking for options’ as they attempt to sell Maguire and Tottenham has emerged as a ‘possible destination’.
Former Man Utd defender Paul Parker has no faith that Maguire will help to improve Newcastle or Tottenham if he moved on.
“Tottenham has got a new manager and I don’t think he wants Maguire,” Parker told BonusBetCodes. “The story about Harry Kane’s and Harry Maguire’s friendship doesn’t mean anything.
“I should have said, when I was playing, that I was best friends with Diego Maradona and then I could have got a move to Napoli.
“If a friendship is a reason why he wants to go to Tottenham, that is absolutely rubbish.
“Tottenham needs a centre half that is better than Eric Dier and that’s not Harry Maguire. They might be on the same level but as a club you won’t achieve anything with either of them.
“Could he do a great job at Newcastle? Not at all. Could he improve Tottenham? Absolutely not.
“I would be absolutely shocked if he goes to Tottenham and I would be even more shocked… Even more shocked if he goes to Newcastle.”
A report emerged earlier this week that Tottenham had offered £50m to Leicester City for both James Maddison and Harvey Barnes with the Foxes set to reject the proposal.
And now Football Insider are ‘currently unwilling to meet Leicester’s valuation’ of Maddison with a source telling the website that they are currently ‘miles apart’ as the Foxes hold out for £50m just for him in ‘price twist’.
