Tottenham have reportedly ‘opened direct talks’ with Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg for defender Micky van de Ven, who is also being linked with Liverpool.

Spurs are on track to sign Leicester City’s James Maddison for around £40m, with the midfielder set to undergo a medical in the coming days.

This signing is a major coup for Spurs as Maddison grabbed 10 goals and nine assists in the Premier League in a poor Leicester team last season.

New boss Ange Postecoglou was always going to be busy in the transfer market this summer after they finished eighth in the Premier League last season.

The former Celtic manager is now seemingly turning his attention to signing a new centre-back. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano is reporting: “Tottenham have opened direct talks with Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven. Dutch centre-back is among top targets.

“Verbal proposal set to be submitted as van de Ven is keen on the move. Edmond Tapsoba remains among options on Spurs list — but he’s more expensive.”

Van de Ven – who is also capable of playing at left-back – shone for Wolfsburg during the 2022/23 campaign as he played 36 times across all competitions.

Liverpool are also understood to be in the running for Van de Ven as Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign a young centre-back who can compete with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Earlier this month, Van de Ven admitted that he would be interested in signing for Liverpool.

“Of course, there are a lot of people who draw lines. It’s true that the director [Schmadtke] went there and I know that Liverpool followed me before. But at the moment I don’t know anything,” Van de Ven told Voetbal International.

“Do I think Liverpool is a nice club? Naturally!”

Van De Ven added: “If a nice club comes along that has a clear plan with me, then I could consider taking a step.

“Then you are open to that in that sense. There is a chance that after this summer I will just play in the Bundesliga, but there is also a chance that I will make a transfer. We will see. Let’s finish this season first.”

Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) meanwhile are reporting that Tottenham are also tracking Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

The report claims the Italian giants  ‘could reflect on an offer of €50m or more’ and this asking price ‘seems to scare’ Premier League clubs.

Along with Spurs, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are mentioned in the report as potential destinations for Bremer.
