Ex-Tottenham boss Sherwood claims new stadium is ‘too fancy’ for the players; calls for Conte sack
Tim Sherwood thinks the Tottenham players are “too comfortable” and that Antonio Conte should get the sack after his outburst at the weekend.
Spurs chucked away a two-goal lead on Saturday against Southampton with goals from Theo Walcott and James Ward-Prowse guiding the Saints from 3-1 down to snatch a 3-3 draw.
Conte was livid after the match with the Tottenham boss criticising his “selfish” players and the Spurs board for the culture at the club.
“I loved it,” Sherwood told talkSPORT when asked about Conte’s rant.
“I don’t love what he said, from Daniel Levy’s point of view Conte’s dissing the club and the ownership.
“He’s tarnishing the football club. If you want to keep players like Harry Kane, which is crucial, and win something, then he’s tarnishing that… I think Levy should sack him.”
The dropped points against Southampton means Tottenham are losing their grip on fourth position with fifth-placed Newcastle United now two points behind with two games in hand.
And Sherwood reckons the Tottenham players are “too comfortable” with the club’s facilities “too fancy” for them.
“Everyone always talks about the lovely training ground and the outstanding stadium they have, who cares?” Sherwood added.
“If you’re a player, I don’t care. It’s all great, but it’s add-ons. I want to win, I’d rather have the worst stadium but win some trophies.
“Antonio’s talking about them being too comfortable, well perhaps the training ground is too plush, perhaps the stadium is too fancy for them.
“They are in a comfortable position, coming from all over the world to London where they can go to Harrods or Selfridges every day with their wives and live the life of Riley.
“It’s about winning, and you need hungry players who want to win.”
On Conte, Sherwood added: “There is no philosophy. The philosophy is ‘get me in the top four, done’.
“You have to say Antonio Conte has done his job. When he came to the club Daniel would’ve asked him what he wanted and Conte would’ve said he wanted to win something.
“But Daniel would’ve said, ‘Get me top four, that’s all I need you to do.'”
