Tottenham will be ‘knocking on the door’ for £60m star as club brace themselves for bids

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly be “knocking on the door” for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison during the January transfer window.

It feels like only a matter of time before Maddison leaves Leicester City. They will be under pressure to sell him in January as interest in him increases.

The Englishman was one of their star players last term and this has continued at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Foxes have struggled this season and their 4-0 win over Nottm Forest on Monday night was their first win of the campaign

Maddison was key to their success in that game as he grabbed two goals and an assist. He has now been involved in seven goals in seven league games.

Newcastle United looked to sign him in the summer and they had bids rejected. Leicester were said to be holding out for around £60m.

It has been suggested that clubs will look to sign Maddison in January and he reportedly ‘wants to join’ Arsenal or Tottenham.

Maddison is out of contract in 2024 and Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers is keen for him to stay long-term:

When asked about a potential contract extension for Maddison, Rodgers said: “I don’t know. You’re speaking to the wrong man. That’s for the club.

“My job is to coach him every day and make him the best he can be.”

He added: “I would think (there would be interest).

“It’s only natural you want your absolute best players to be here, and we keep saying that, but we keep losing them.

“He’s never a player you would want to lose. But I can only focus on him now and day by day.

“The beauty of James, and it’s the same with this England scenario, it hasn’t affected him. That’s where you see the level of maturity.

“What we’ve seen in the past is, sadly, players are linked with all sorts of clubs because an agent has to create a market, and then when it doesn’t come off, you see the player then go down.

“It’s never been like that, and James has been linked with loads.

“But he’s also a realist. He also knows he’s in a good place to develop and learn, and he knows he can focus on day-to-day life and improve. What will be in the future will be, but it will only be on the back of playing well.”

Dean Jones has now reported that Tottenham will be among the clubs “knocking on the door in January”:

“They’ve got a big game on Monday and they’ll be looking to turn around their season,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“If they can’t do that, then I think there’ll be a few clubs, probably including Tottenham, knocking on the door in January.”
