Dybala, Luiz, Iwobi, Lo Celso: Relive transfer deadline day

Ian Watson

Welcome to Football365’s transfer deadline day blog. If it’s completed deals you want, here you go. If you’re here for the bullsh*t and bluster, then strap in…

19.36: I’m done. By all accounts David Luiz is joining Arsenal and Alex Iwobi is greeting him on the way out as he heads to Everton. The deals are done; the announcements are pending.

So that’s us signing off. It’s been…good fun, actually. A really lively, entertaining deadline day. Here’s to Jim White getting a solid night’s sleep.

19.28: This just in…

19.18: I’m giving these clubs until half 7 to sort their damn sh*t out. They’ve had all f***ing summer.

Crossy’s here, by the way.

19.02: We are officially past the point of both the deadline and of caring. But Dennis Praet’s move to Leicester is done, done, done.

Which leaves us with David Luiz (Arsenal), Alex Iwobi (Everton) and Kevin Danso (Southampton). Pull your fingers out, guys.

18.54: There’s one of those deal sheets put to good use…

Just four left to go now. We’re almost there.

18.47: Leicester are keeping themselves busy. Defender Callum Elder has joined Hull on a permanent deal, while midfielder Dennis Praet has been spotted in and around the King Power Stadium ahead of his protracted move. Still no announcement, though.

Sheffield United, meanwhile, have signed Michael Verrips from Mechelen. Me neither.

18.33: Sky Sports use hilarious language when it comes to transfers, don’t they? Southampton are apparently ‘working furiously’ to get Kevin Danso across the line before 7pm.

Why are they so angry?

18.20: Izzy Brown (Chelsea) and James Bree (Aston Villa) are headed to Luton on loan deals.

Nakhi Wells has returned to QPR on a temporary basis, too.

Still no word of those Prem deals, mind.

18.03: There is less than an hour remaining for deal sheet transfers to be completed. The Premier League say six were submitted. With either Lo Celso or Drinkwater having gone through after the 5pm deadline, the others are:

David Luiz to Arsenal.
Alex Iwobi to Everton.
Dennis Praet to Leicester.
Mo Besic to Sheffield United
Kevin Danso to Southampton.

17.56: The centre-half Southampton are in for is said to be Kevin Danso of Augsburg. Sam Wallace of the Daily Telegraph knows.

And Burnley have just announced the consumption of Daniel Quenchthirst. Premier League winner, no less.

17.44: Two other deal sheets are thought to be that for Dennis Praet’s move to Leicester, and the one for Danny Drinkwater to stay hydrated at Burnley.

Also, Liverpool have sent Ovie Ejaria to Reading on loan with a view to a permanent £3.5m move. Will they get Coutinho to replace him?

17.39: Now this is interesting…

David Luiz, innit?

17.32: One of the themes of this deadline day has been Crystal Palace frantically searching for a striker who can do plenty of the goals. They have enough of the ones who don’t, you see.

A move for Fedor Chalov seems to be off the table, and Sky Sports say similar regarding their interest in Jean-Kevin Augustin of RB Leipzig. A 315m fee was planned, but the forward himself wanted to consider his European options.

17.20: F***. Completely forgot about Giovani Lo Celso. Tottenham fortunately didn’t. That deal is done.

For all the money? Nope…on loan. With only an option to buy. How very bizarre.

17.10: Ah, that was another possibility. Although it isn’t now. Everton couldn’t agree a fee for Marcos Rojo – they presumably wanted Man United to pay for them to take him – so they’ve moved away from that.

Iwobi at centre-half, lads.

17.00: That’s your transfer window shut. It’s all over. Everyone can log off, put their phones away and spend time with loved ones.

That’s not how it works, of course. There will be official confirmations for another ten bloody years if previous ‘deadlines’ are anything to go by. Everyone remembers Andrei Arshavin.

From what I can remember, the following deals are still possible/probable:

David Luiz to Arsenal.
Alex Iwobi to Everton.
Scott Carson to Manchester City.
Dennis Praet to Leicester.
Mark Duffy to Stoke.

And a load of bloody youth loans. Sky are yet to spaff their load on the deal sheets as they tend to.

16.46: Kieran Tierney to Arsenal is done. And Alex Iwobi leaving Arsenal is a distinct possibility.

Adrian Kajumba seems confident the latter deal will go through, which is a bit of a shocker.

Andy Carroll is back at Newcastle, meanwhile.

16.33: One move that still looks likely to go through before the deadline is David Luiz’s to Arsenal. It’s been a while since we’ve had an update, so thank the lord for Sky Sports News and their need to fill every silence ever:

“We may not have official confirmation in the next half hour but so long as the paperwork is in before 5pm, the clubs don’t have to make the news public before the deadline,” says Geraint Hughes.
“I’m assured that things are going well – so just a little more patience needed!”

Gary Cotterill is at Stamford Bridge and says the deal is “imminent”.

16.30: Half an hour left. It’s all gone a bit quiet.

What’s everyone having for tea? Spag bol over here.

16.18: Birkir Bjarnason has secured the mutual termination of his Aston Villa contract. Could that not have been done about two months ago, lads?

If you want to read more about Manchester United making a loss on a player who had a decent scoring record for them, enjoy.

16.07: Arsenal have confirmed Eddie Nketiah’s move to Leeds on loan, but we won’t believe it until David Ornstein says it.

Nakhi Wells is apparently heading back to QPR on a permanent basis from Burnley.

And here’s a good one: Watford have had a bid for Danny Rose rejected. What?

16.03: Romelu Lukaku has rocked up in Italy, presumably with some brilliant sprinting stats. Will he finally be loved over there?

16.01: Roy Hodgson has spoken about Wilfried Zaha. There is something glorious about a 71-year-old man confirming that there is “beef” involved.

15.49: Mo Besic – remember him? – has emerged as a target for Fulham and Sheffield United. And speaking of midfielders with Premier League, Brighton have bagged Aaron Mooy on loan from Huddersfield.

15.45: Head here to read about Paulo Dybala being ‘furious’ at his situation with Tottenham. What a mess.

Oh, and the fee Watford are paying for Sarr is said to be £30m. Crikey.

15.32: It’s the Wilfried Zaha update to end them all, courtesy of Sky Sports…

‘Sky Sports News have been told by Crystal Palace’s that their business is done and Wilfried Zaha is staying at the club.’

So that’s that. Crystal Palace keep their disgruntled man, Arsenal stare lovingly at Nicolas Pepe, and Everton consider other targets. And Marcos Rojo.

15.30: Making light of fans being ridiculous will never not be funny.

15.26: The moves are positively flowing now:

Arsenal have loaned Eddie Nketiah out to Leeds.
Watford have confirmed the presumably club-record signing of winger Ismaila Sarr.
Andy Carroll is at Newcastle ahead of his planned return on an incentivised short-term contract.

15.18: Ryan Sessegnon to Tottenham is done. The official confirmation has not arrived just yet but David Ornstein, Jack Pitt-Brooke and Dan Kilpatrick are all reporting an initial £25m deal on a five-year contract, with the option of a sixth.

15.11: We are officially in ‘Sky Sports explaining exactly what a ‘Premier League deal sheet’ entails’ territory.

It’s going to be a long afternoon/evening.

15:00: More on this as we get it…

14:55: No transfers to discuss but at least Alan Smith had a pleasant afternoon hanging out with some friends…

14:52: Southampton will make £4million from selling Charlie Austin to West Brom. Apparently, he’s not taking a pay-cut either. Mario Lemina will have to stick it out in the stiffs in the hope a European club comes in before the end of the month.

14: 50: Another transfer! We’re very sorry.

14:40: Watford’s pursuit of a winger isn’t going great. Rennes are pricing Ismailia Sarr too high and now PSV’s Steven Bergwijn appears to be blowing them out…

14:30: A transfer! Not a big one, but a transfer all the same.

West Brom have taken Grady Diangana on loan from West Ham for the season. Charlie Austin has apparently passed a medical and agreed terms on his move from Southampton.

14:15: We’re this close to the deadline and Sky Sports News are showing photos of viewers watching Sky Sports News. That’s how little is happening.

You might as well go and do some work or something.

Come back, though. Please?

14:00: Maybe Dybala isn’t dead after all. The deal that is, not the player.

13:50: The one potential deal gathering a head of steam is one that doesn’t have to be done today. But Andy Carroll is heading to Newcastle to sign a heavily-incentivised deal to return to his former club on a one-year contract. That’s nice, isn’t it?

13:40: The deadline is in just over three hours. I’m not sure anyone has told the Premier League clubs. Probably just an oversight.

13:30: Newcastle were quoted £30million by Chelsea when they asked a year ago how much it would cost to sign Kenedy. Today, it looks like he’s off to Reading.

13:25: Amid all the cry-arsing over certain Premier League clubs not spending £50million-plus on players many of us have never seen play, a League One club is slowly dying…

13:23: Villa have decided that 137 new players is enough for now…

13:20: Reports in the North East suggested Newcastle turned down a £35million approach from Man Utd last week. Their refusal to return with a higher offer is understandable in this instance…

13:05: ‘Manchester United are delighted to announce the signing of Saido Berahino on a six-year contract…’

12:50: The Mirror report that Jorge Mendes is desperately trying to tempt Man Utd into buying Bruno Fernandes in the next four hours. United have shown no inclination to do anything today other than sell so all the best with that, big fella.

12:35: Danny Drinkwater has emerged from semi-retirement and currently has his balls in the hand of the Burnley doctor before a possible loan move from Chelsea.

12:33: Is there any aspect of this deal which might have appealed to Man Utd?

12:30: One of those deals was Zaha to Everton, which could still happen. Sky reckon Wilf wasn’t training with Palace this morning. Make of that what you will.

12:25: On Tuesday, we predicted 10 deals that would go through before the deadline. At the moment, we’re on for 5 out 10. We’re having 50 per cent as a pass.

12:15: Juventus won’t let Dybala leave without having a replacement lined up. That’s the word according to Sky Italy.

12:10: Sorry for disappearing briefly but you’ve missed nothing short of f*ck all.

11:55: The Daily Star suggests Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ‘two concerns’ over Mario Mandzukic.

1) His age
2) His wages

If only there was some way United could have known about either before deadline day…

11:50: Running through the tears…

11:40: This needs a little tweaking but it’s nearly midday so let’s get leathered.

11:35: Numerous sources say Everton and Villa target Marcos Rojo is currently at Carrington with his agent.

Expect United to announce a new contract just after 5pm.

11:25: It seems Watford are getting no closer to an agreement with Rennes for Ismailia Sarr. Sky Sports reckons a deal is unlikely.

11:15: Wait, what? The Mirror’s Darren Lewis reckons talks between Spurs and Fulham over Ryan Sessegnon have ‘hit an impasse’.

Jesus, this must be the simplest deadline day deal of all time but Levy gonna Levy.

11: 10: Ronaldo doesn’t recognise Danilo, does he…

11:05: This one doesn’t have to be done today since Carroll is a free agent. We bet he is keen…

11am: Oh, Mike. You are too kind..

10:50: Well, well, well…

10:45: Nottingham Forest there, stockpiling footballers before Brexit…

10:35: Some of the figures involved in the negotiations to take Paulo Dybala to Spurs, courtesy of The Guardian

Dybala will be on around £350,000 a week, which some reports have suggested Juve might top up. But image rights and agents’ fees could cost £12million in addition to a transfer fee of £64million.

Just a hunch based on absolutely nothing, but we can see this one not happening, before Dybala joins PSG later in the month.

10:25: Man Utd might be about to shift one centre-back off the books. Apparently, Everton and Aston Villa are both keen in Marcos Rojo’s own brand of kamikaze defending. It might be worth their while to put their physios through a medical before going near that one.

10:20: Let’s just take a moment to remember Bruno Fernandes.
K, thanks.

10:05: Sky Sports’ James Cooper appears to have emerged from a cave in Tora Bora to offer an update on Man Utd’s activity today. Mario Mandzukic ‘could happen’ but that’s about it.

United apparently don’t feel the need to reinforce a midfield that was already creaking before Ander Herrera moved to PSG. For all the talk of Sancho, Dybala, Eriksen and co, they are set to have a lower net spend than Arsenal, who fooled us all into thinking they didn’t have a pot to piss in. Bravo, Ed.

10am: Derby found it ‘impossible to stand in the way of a dream move’ for Scott Carson, apparently. We all dream of getting paid a sodding fortune for sitting down, to be fair.

9:55: Just a quick reminder that Matteo Darmian is still a Manchester United player.

9:50: A new deal for Sir Alex Ferguson’s favourite…

9:40: It’s been a big few minutes for Leeds. Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah is on his way to Yorkshire for a medical ahead of a season-long loan. Once he arrives in God’s Own Country, he’ll be greeted by a new keeper. Let’s hope this doesn’t end Kiko Casilla’s reign of terror in the Leeds goal…

9:30: Sorry, just had to nip off and compile a Mailbox. I bet The Athletic don’t have these problems.

Anyway, David Luiz is the bargain of the summer, apparently…

9:05: Gary Neville won’t miss the big man…

9:02: Good morning to you, Mr Gold…

9am: Southampton have been gasping to shift Charlie Austin this summer and it seems like he’s taken the hint. Apparently he’s currently at West Brom for a medical.

As for Mario Lemina, the midfielder is probably checking that his phone is still working.

8:50: Dybala and Lo Celso? No wonder two of us have Harry Kane to win the Golden Boot.

8:45: United have done well here to get something close to their money back on a player they really don’t want.

Scenes when they sign Fernando Llorente for free as his replacement.

8:30: Scott Carson is set to follow in the footsteps of his great heroes Richard Wright and Stuart Taylor by moving to Manchester City on a season-long loan. He’s due to have a medical this morning to make sure he’s fit for all that sitting…

8:20: Aye, all the talk is that Arsenal and Chelsea have an £8million deal agreed for David Luiz.

8:15: Look how happy Inter Milan fans are to see Romelu Lukaku. Bless.

8:10: Three of us here at F365 have Brighton to go down this season.

Graham Potter is doing his best to make us look dafter than normal by making additions today. Reports of a a £28million bid for Genk midfielder Sander Berge are said to be wide of the mark, but the Seagulls are reported to be signing Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy on loan for the season.

You’re going to have to do better than that, Gary Porter.

8am: Watford could regret faffing over Ismaila Sarr. Rennes want just shy of £37million, which the Hornets have so far refused to pay. But, apparently, now Palace might swoop if they sell Zaha for around double that figure.

To cover themselves, Watford are reported to be talking to PSV winger Steven Bergwijn as an alternative.

The Hornets did one very shrewd piece of business yesterday.

7:55: We bring you terrible news. The dream of a David Luiz-Shkodran Mustafi partnership in the centre of Arsenal’s defence could be dead. Sky Sports reckon Mustafi might be heading to a Ligue 1 club today either permanently or on loan.

We were so close.

7:45: Where’s Wilf?

Frankly, we’ve no idea. Having breakfast, perhaps. But he’s waiting on Everton to make a renewed bid after he slapped in a transfer request yesterday to turn the screw on Palace. Everton and Palace have already conducted business in the last 24 hours after James McCarthy went to Selhurst Park for £8million.

7:30: Leicester have got a wedge the size of Harry Maguire’s head burning a hole in their pocket. Apparently £18million of it is going to Sampdoria for midfielder Dennis Praet. Sampdoria coach Eusebio Di Francesco said: “I will miss Praet, he is one of the best midfielders in Italy.”

7:25: Will United replace Lukaku? Maybe. Maybe not.

There are plenty of whispers around Mario Mandzukic – Sky Italy reckon talks with Juventus have reopened – and Inaki Williams. Apparently, United are willing to pay his £81million release clause. Because they had so much fun the last time they got into it with Athletic Bilbao on deadline day, they want to do it all again…

7:20: Romelu Lukaku is in Milan having his final tests before becoming an Inter player. Let’s hope they don’t measure his first touch having not played a minute in pre-season.

7:10: Kieran Tierney is hurtling towards Arsenal for what we presume will be a stringent medical at Arsenal after the Gunners finally agreed to pay Celtic’s asking price without making the final total dependent on the number of Grand Nationals, Royal Rumbles and Super Bowls he might win at the Emirates.

As for David Luiz… as of yesterday, Arsenal had not made a formal approach for the Chelsea defender but reports suggest an £8million deal will get done.

7:05: Plenty of dropping trousers and coughing expected in north London this morning.

Giovani Lo Celso is expected at Tottenham after they finally agreed a deal with Real Betis. ORNSTEEEEEEIIIIIN reckons that’s a loan deal with the obligation to buy.

Ryan Sessegnon is also set to have a medical with Spurs following an agreement with Fulham that really need not have taken all summer.

7am: Good morning. Right, where are we?

Since  yesterday evening, Man City have completed the signing of Joao Cancelo with Danilo going to Juventus in part-exchange; Crystal Palace have done deals for Victor Camarasa and James McCarthy; and Everton have signed a Word Cup winner in Djibril Sidibe.
