Gossip: Arsenal braced for Barca bid, Man Utd to sign no one

Three and a half days to go in the January window and the most exciting Gossip around Manchester United involves Alexis Sanchez. It’s 2018 all over again.

It seemed they had righted that particular wrong by sending Sanchez to Inter Milan for the season but the Daily Star says Ed Woodward has already told the Chilean’s entourage that he won’t be sold and he is expected to go on tour with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad in a bid to reintegrate himself back into the club. There’s flogging a dead horse, and then there’s this.

More bad news for United fans: the expectation now is that they won’t make a single signing this week, despite the desperate need to strengthen Solskjaer’s squad.

The Independent says United’s hierarchy wanted to sign a midfielder and a striker but everyone at Old Trafford expects those pursuits to come up short. And incredibly, they don’t seem too concerned about being held accountable for such an obvious failure.

Why won’t they sign anyone? Because other clubs are being selfish in expecting a fair fee for their players. Apparently, United enquired about Edinson Cavani but it never went beyond that first stage given PSG’s demands for a player who will leave for nothing in the summer. Except he probably won’t because Atletico or Chelsea will stump up the money required to address their obvious weaknesses.

And what of Bruno Fernandes? United and Sporting Lisbon are said to remain around £20million apart in their valuations of the Portugal midfielder. At this stage if you’re Fernandes, the temptation must be to tell United to f*ck off and bother someone else.

Which is what they intend to do in the summer, according to this report. Jack Grealish or James Maddison are their primary targets, so Villa and Leicester best brace themselves now for seven months of Woodward’s sh*t.

Similarly, the morning’s whispers won’t bring much cheer to Arsenal fans.

Like United, the Gunners have clear and obvious deficiencies in their squad but have so far failed to address them. It seemed like the signing of Pablo Mari from Flamengo was a step in the right direction but numerous reports suggest that deal is in serious danger of collapse.

Just as concerning as the lack of recruits is the possibility of departures. Especially when it comes to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Telegraph says Arsenal are bracing themselves for an offer from Barcelona for the striker this week, though Barca don’t seem overly optimistic of tempting the Gunners into selling their best player.

Chelsea, like United and Barca, need a striker though ESPN reckons it won’t be Cavani because the Uruguayan is edging closer to the Atletico Madrid move that he has been hoping for all month.

So the Blues could get involved in the race for Krzysztof Piatek, who AC Milan are hoping to get rid of this week. The Italians hoped to make around £25million on the centre-forward but so far, his various suitors have only shown serious interest in a loan move.

Tottenham are still monitoring Piatek’s situation, but they have other irons in the fire, specifically Andre Silva and Willian Jose.

Villa too need a striker and it seems Dean Smith could look to bring Daniel Sturridge back from Turkey.

Fanatik claims the Villans have made a £4.2million offer for the former Liverpool striker and Trabzonspor would be willing to sell to get the 30-year-old’s wages off their books. Did they not check his salary when they signed him five months ago?
