Gossip: Chelsea snubbed Eriksen swap, Rice alternative explored

The aftermath of deadline day is usually littered with whispers of deals that never happened and a few this week have centred around Chelsea. Here’s another…

It seems Antonio Conte wanted to bring N’Golo Kante to Italy this summer. Calciomercato is reporting that Inter Milan approached Chelsea with a swap deal that involved Christian Eriksen heading in the opposite direction.

Kante was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge for much of the summer but Chelsea refused to consider this particular offer.

Had the Blues been able to get their hands on Declan Rice then perhaps they may have been more open to selling Kante. But West Ham stood firm in the face of Chelsea’s interest and Rice remains a Hammer.

Chelsea received very little encouragement over their pursuit of Rice and football.london reckons they are no more optimistic of doing a deal in the near future. So they are considering alternatives.

One is said to be Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare. The 21-year-old was the subject of interest late in the window from Napoli, Inter and AC Milan but no move materialised. Come next summer, Soumare will have only a year remaining on his contract.

The international window may be closed but West Ham aren’t done yet. David Moyes still has a week to scour the Championship for a centre-back and a midfielder.

The Daily Star suggests the Hammers are considering a £5million offer for QPR midfielder Ryan Manning, who can also play at left-back. But most of their attention seems to be focused on Bournemouth…

Josh King is a target but, according to The Guardian, West Ham believe the Cherries should lower their £17.5million valuation. King’s Bournemouth team-mate Steve Cook is also reported to be in their sights, while elsewhere, the Irons have their eye on Cardiff’s Sean Morrison, Watford defender Craig Dawson and Swansea’s Matt Grimes.

Manchester United are prepared to take their sweet time over their search for a centre-back, despite the gaping hole next to Harry Maguire.

The Mirror yesterday made a tenuous link between United and Dayot Upamecano since the RB Leipzig defender is set to be available at a knockdown price next summer.

Bild reckons Liverpool will put up a fight to sign the Frenchman for £36.5million, while Manchester City are also monitoring the situation, despite having spent £100million on centre-backs this summer.
