Gossip: Eriksen snubbed as Arsenal target centre-half

Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Christian Eriksen – according to an exclusive in the Daily Star – but will turn down that chance because obviously they don’t need Eriksen when they have the undroppable and non-negotiable Willian. The Dane will instead be pursued by Borussia Dortmund and PSG.

Arsenal are instead prioritising the signing of a centre-half, because of course they only have Gabriel, William Saliba, Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding, Pablo Mari, Sokratis and David Luiz, with Kieran Tierney another option if they play three centre-halves. That makes complete sense.

In the most predictable of plot twists, it turns out that Arsenal target Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to join RB Leipzig in January and be loaned back to sister club Red Bull Salzburg for the rest of the season. Colour us shocked.

The Hungarian left-sided midfielder has claimed five goals and nine assists in 14 games for his club this season as well as scoring the late winner that took his country to Euro 2020. His form has attracted interest from across Europe but most notably from Arsenal, Tottenham, Wolves and Leicester in the Premier League.

It’s just a line on an Italian website but it is claimed that Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is a target for both Napoli and Tottenham. His stock has certainly risen since the summer, when he was linked with a move to either Newcastle or Tottenham.

Mateta has since scored seven goals in eight Bundesliga games, including a hat-trick against Freiburg this weekend that pulled Mainz out of the relegation zone.
