Gossip: Klopp ‘convinced’ by £70m star after Spurs rejection

Liverpool are ‘in pole position’ for Kalidou Koulibaly. Everton, Newcastle and Spurs ‘are not so attractive’ to him.

KOUL CUSTOMERS
What will happen if and when someone actually does sign Kalidou Koulibaly? Will transfer gossip columns collapse into themselves, unable to be sustained by snippets of information on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future or Jadon Sancho’s current whereabouts? Koulibaly is the very foundation upon which the entire industry is built. It could all go under.

Premier League clubs are apparently ‘starting to knock’ on Napoli’s door. It feels like they’ve been waiting impatiently outside to ask for years who they voted for in the most recent local election and whether they believe in God.

Calciomercato add that Everton and Tottenham are ‘most concerned’ with the defender. They, along with Newcastle, can ‘present important offers’. But Koulibaly isn’t overly interested; he will leave ‘only for a top club’.

Liverpool are thrust into the equation once more as one of four clubs Koulibaly ‘is ready to take into consideration’. PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona would also tempt the Senegalese but Everton, Tottenham and Newcastle ‘are not so attractive’ in his eyes.

POLE DANCING
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that’s all for Koulibaly on Friday. No sooner is the field narrowed to four than another leading contender drops out.

PSG have ‘decided to backtrack’ and instead offer Thiago Silva a contract extension. Koulibaly ‘is no longer a priority’ and even state-financed clubs have to explore cheaper options right now.

They are still interested but any deal for Koulibaly would not be done until 2021. But Le10Sport claim that he ‘had not in any way intended to join’ in the first place, because the PSG project is ‘not the most attractive in his eyes’.

Why does everyone keep saying that?

Instead, the centre-half ‘shows a clear preference’ for one destination: the Premier League. And Liverpool ‘has just made a very noticed entry in the Koulibaly dossier’. How fancy. Let’s hope they have ring binders and laminates and everything.

Liverpool are ‘boiling over the idea’ of ‘forming an exceptional hinge’ in their central defence. Yet again, what about Joe bloody Gomez?

Anyway, mysterious ‘sources’ are ‘fairly optimistic’ about how negotiations have progressed, and Liverpool are ‘now in pole position’. Jurgen Klopp ‘seems totally convinced’ about the deal. For about £70m in the midst of a global pandemic, you’d sure hope so.

UNITED FRONT
Manchester United, of course, don’t want Koulibaly at the minute. They are far more bothered about throwing money at Aston Villa and Jack Grealish.

Yet, according to The Sun, that figure has dropped. United ‘are stepping up their pursuit’ of the Villa captain who ‘could be available for as little as £50m’ if they are relegated.

Despite his recent controversies it seems that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ‘only heard good things’ about Grealish and ‘his character’. And while Villa ‘would demand’ £70m or so, United are placing eggs into a basket marked ‘Championship’.

Quite why Villa would sell their prized asset for less at a time of weakness when they don’t need to, no-one knows. And again, quite where this money is coming from at a time of impending financial crisis is a mystery.

AND THE REST
Borussia Dortmund expect England winger Jadon Sancho, 20, to remain at the club, despite continued interest from Manchester United… Arsenal could be given the chance to sign Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi, 27, as a direct replacement for Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Aubameyang, 30, is out of contract next season, while Argentine Icardi is currently on loan at Paris St-Germain… The Gunners are also close to securing an agreement with free agent George Lewis. The Norwegian winger, 19, was previously at Tromso… Chelsea target Dries Mertens has yet to agree a contract extension with Napoli. The Belgian forward, 33, is out of contract in the summer… Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham are all interested in Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Serbian, 25, will be allowed to leave the club for upwards of £80m.
