The gossip brings us talk of one man wanting out of Liverpool while Manchester United’s ‘increasingly frantic search’ takes them to Everton…
KEITA WANTS OUT OF LIVERPOOL
Oh hello. This is interesting. Sky Sports Deutschland are reporting that midfielder Naby Keita is ‘unhappy’ and could leave Liverpool this summer, though there is a distinct lack of suitors mentioned.
“There is movement, because Naby Keita is not at all satisfied with his role,” said Sky reporter and transfer expert Floarian Plettenberg, though the idea that Liverpool would sell a central midfielder this summer is ludicrous; they already seem to be down to the bare bones.
Keita was on the bench against Crystal Palace on Monday; he must be a tad annoyed that the child Harvey Elliott is ahead of him in the central midfield rankings along with old man James Milner.
The Mail’s update on the story is that Liverpool will not sell this summer but will risk losing him for free next year. Let’s face it, it’s never quite worked out.
AND A GOALKEEPER MAKES IT SIX MANCHESTER UNITED TARGETS
The latest claim from the Daily Telegraph is that Manchester United are pursuing Everton back-up goalkeeper Asmir Begovic as their second-choice goalkeeper this season, which makes you wonder why Tom Heaton is held in such low regard.
So that makes six players Manchester United are targeting in the last two weeks of the summer transfer window as the Telegraph brought us a chunky update on Wednesday evening, namely that Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier and Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic were among those being targeted in what was described as an ‘increasingly frantic search’. A right-back, two midfielders, another winger and a new striker are on the agenda.
The whole cast list of names mentioned here are Meunier, Pulisic, Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro, Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Barcelona full-back Sergino Dest. Frenkie de Jong remains a key target but that seems about as likely as Darwin Nunez accidentally headbutting Joachim Andersen.
How many of those Manchester United can pull off is the next question; Casemiro has already been linked with Chelsea.
Fingers crossed they get Begovic at least.
PSG PURSUE MANCHESTER CITY MAN
Bernardo Silva has been trying to leave Manchester City from almost the minute he arrived but it feels like it might be possible this summer, if somebody matches City’s £68m valuation this summer, which would be some serious money for a 28-year-old. He would prefer Barcelona but there’s a point at which even Barcelona stop spending money they patently do not have.
So enter PSG, who are apparently willing to pay about £59m for the Portuguese midfielder, who already has a strong relationship with their recently appointed sporting adviser, Luis Campos. Would Manchester City sell to PSG, who are basically trying to pull off the same trick as them? You suspect they would if they came up with £68m.
Silva has played just 37 minutes in this nascent Premier League season, with Pep Guardiola preferring to play Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin de Bruyne as his central attacking midfielders.
