Gossip: Liverpool issue response to ‘desperate’ £20m links

The transfer world moves awful fast, meaning that Sunday’s speculation is Monday’s mischief. Liverpool have wasted no time in distancing themselves from Ozan Kabak.

It was the Daily Mirror who reported interest from the Reds in the Schalke centre-half. They suggested the Bundesliga side wanted £40m at the start of the year and £30m in the current market, with Liverpool willing to offer only £20m with add-ons in January.

But the Liverpool Echo have pretty swiftly quelled those claims, reporting on ‘head scratching inside the club’ at those ‘fresh links’.

‘One Anfield source believes it is simply the work of an exuberant agent and a team desperate for the cash,’ it is added. Be happy with your Fabinho and don’t kick up a fuss, basically.

Transfer rumours are thin on the ground – it is late October in the middle of a global pandemic – but there is another nugget of information in a Daily Mail article.

This comes from Jack Gaughan, who pontificates on the future of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Spaniard has a year remaining on his contract but an extension does not seem to be forthcoming at this moment.

Who would be targeted to replace him? ‘Only two men really spring to mind’: Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann. ‘City like the look of both. They will not be the only club in Europe who do.’

Take your pick from this list, too. Sam Allardyce at the Etihad? Lovely.

One man whose prospects are even more uncertain is Jack Wilshere, released by West Ham and a free agent at just 28.

The erstwhile England international quite likes the look of MLS by most accounts but a move to Rangers had also been mooted as Steven Gerrard looks to build on the six-point gap he holds in the Scottish Premiership. Insert joke about slips here.

The Football Insider claim that is no longer an option as Rangers will ‘pull the plug’ on talks ‘after being told he is set to head overseas’. That sounds a bit like telling someone you no longer want to go out with them shortly after they’ve dumped you.

No other interested parties are actually mentioned, with unnamed teams in Serie A and La Liga monitoring the situation along with some #soccerfranchises in MLS. Oh, what could have been.
