Man City want Haaland, Lukaku, Kane; United want Cavani

The transfer gossip is awash with talk of Haaland, Lukaku, Kane and other strikers…

MAN CITY DOUBLE SCOOP SCUPPERED BY VILLA
‘Manchester City plan to make a major splash this summer with attempts to land both Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish,’ claims the Daily Mail, who say the double deal is ‘expected to cost close to £200million’. Hmmm. We are not sure about their maths because surely Haaland alone will cost something close to £150m this summer as he literally scores a goal a game. And there is zero chance of getting Grealish for much less than £100m himself. Last year it was £80m and he is still more priceless to Villa than anyone else.

The Daily Telegraph are rather more sensible, claiming that ‘Manchester City are prioritising a move for Erling Haaland with Sergio Aguero due to leave in the summer but interest in Jack Grealish is severely complicated by Aston Villa’s £100 million valuation of the England midfielder’. Severely complicated indeed. City will have to smash their transfer record to sign Haaland and it seems unlikely they will hit the £100m mark twice in one summer.

As for Haaland…they will face competition from Real Madrid and Chelsea. It might well boil down to whether the Spanish club can afford him this summer.

IF NOT HAALAND…
…then Harry Kane obviously. The Times weigh in with the news that a failed move for Erling Haaland will lead Manchester City towards Kane. The slight problem might be Tottenham’s reluctance to sell to a rival and a price tag around the £150m mark. The smart money seems to be on an exit from Spurs in 2022, when Kane will have two years on his contract and his value starts to plunge.

Or will it be Romelu Lukaku? Eurosport claim that the Belgian striker is the back-up plan for both City and Chelsea if they fail to land Haaland. Inter Milan may yet have to sell the former Manchester United man and there will be suitors aplenty among those who miss out on Haaland.

MAN UNITED HOLD CAVANI TALKS
Back to the Daily Mail now for talk of Manchester United holding ‘showdown talks’ with Edinson Cavani in a bid to convince him to stay for another season. It’s hard to see why they are making such efforts; surely they will target another striker this summer and the 34-year-old Uruguayan is little more than a stop-gap signing.

Cavani and newly-appointed director of football John Murtough and executive vice chairman Ed Woodward reportedly met ‘at noon’ for full dramatic purposes and tried to persuade him to stay for another season. He is understandably worried that they will sign a new striker and his opportunities will be limited. He should be worried because they absolutely should sign another striker.
