Transfer gossip: Man Utd lead Arsenal in chase for Portugal midfielder, Prem trio eye Bale

Vitinha celebrates scoring for Porto.

Man Utd are the ‘number one pretender’ for a player Arsenal also want, while three clubs fancy bringing Gareth Bale back to the Premier League…

Vitinha failed to impress Wolves but his form for Porto last season seems to have pitted Manchester United and Arsenal against each other.

The Portugal midfielder struggled to catch the eye in 23 fleeting appearances during a loan at Molineux in 2020-21 but only two players played more games for Porto when he returned last season.

According to A Bola, United have been checking on Vitinha since March and the Red Devils are the 22-year-old’s ‘number 1 pretender’. Which is apt description of United in general these days.

Newcastle have also been linked but for the Magpies, Vitinha hasn’t been a priority. Arsenal have shown more intent, and Porto president Pinto da Costa has already rebuffed one bid from an unnamed club while insisting that the player’s £35million release clause be met.

Half of Europe’s top 10 goalscorers under 23 remain available this summer

Newcastle are also among the clubs being linked with a move for Gareth Bale…

The Wales star is a free agent this summer when his Real Madrid contract finally expires. Bale has said he will consult the Wales manager and physio to get their view on which move will give him the best chance of being in peak condition for the World Cup, and clubs are lining up to make the 32-year-old an offer.

The Sun says Tottenham are monitoring their former star’s situation, despite recent claims they weren’t interested, while Villa and the Magpies are also mentioned as potential suitors, as well as Cardiff.

The future is much clearer for Romelu Lukaku – at least in his own mind.

The Belgian is desperate to go back to Inter Milan, who are ready to facilitate a return, but the Italians need a favour from Chelsea.

Fortunately, the Blues appear to be feeling generous. Despite Chelsea’s demands putting Inter off a deal earlier in the week, The Telegraph says talks between the two clubs have progressed well, with Sky Sports reporting they are now only £4.3million apart in their valuations.

Chelsea have already reduced their demands for a loan deal to £8.6million, but Inter feel encouraged enough to ask for another 50 per cent discount. The general feeling is that the clubs will find some common ground, since Chelsea have little interest in having Lukaku get under Thomas Tuchel’s feet next season.

Chelsea will be rather less enthused over reports from Spain over the future of Jules Kounde.

The Sevilla centre-back has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for the last year – it feels like a lot longer – and it was thought this summer would be when Chelsea finally get their man.

But, according to Esport3, Barcelona have got involved and the defender is closing in on a move to the Nou Camp. Apparently, Barca have found whatever figure between £47million and £51million that it will take to convince Sevilla to sell, and the Catalans will chuck a player into the deal too.
