OZIL ALMOST LEFT ARSENAL
So many of the whispers in the immediate aftermath of the transfer window surround the deals that didn’t happen. Here’s one that Mikel Arteta would have been happy to see go through…
Apparently, Mesut Ozil was the subject of an offer from a club in Qatar which would have seen Arsenal relieved of the burden of his massive salary. The Mirror says Ozil was prepared to listen and Arteta was willing to approve the German’s exit.
But Arsenal thought better of it given the timing of the offer. Coming as late as it did last week, it left the Gunners with no time to recruit a replacement, with two of their primary targets, Dani Olmo and Yannick Carrasco, having already joined RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid respectively.
LIVERPOOL MULL OVER SANCHO MOVE
It seemed unlikely when he was leading the line for Swindon in the 1990s that a quarter of a century later we would be getting our transfer gossip from Jan Aage Fjortoft. But here we are…
The former striker-turned-TV pundit claims to have an in at Borussia Dortmund and he brings us news that Jadon Sancho is likely to leave this summer. Which we already knew.
But Fjortoft goes on to say that Liverpool are still mulling over whether to smash their transfer record for the England winger. Apparently, Dortmund are looking for £126million for Sancho and the Reds are yet to decide whether they can afford such a figure.
LILLE STAR WAITING FOR REDS OR UNITED
Another player who could be heading to Anfield in the summer is Boubakary Soumare.
Lille accepted a £45million offer from Newcastle last month but the 20-year-old is in no rush to leave the Ligue 1 club. Le10Sport reckons Soumare has his heart set on ‘a more prestigious way out’.
They say the 20-year-old specifically fancies a move to either Liverpool or Manchester United, with both clubs having shown an interest, along with many of Europe’s other big hitters. Neither the reds nor United made an offer last month but Soumare is prepared to play the long game. Which you suspect Newcastle knew all along but at least they offered the illusion of intent last month.
AND THE REST
Edinson Cavani had no interest in joining Chelsea or Man Utd last month… Atletico Madrid say they were “not here to be robbed” following their interest in Cavani.. INter Miami may now step their efforts to land Cavani as a free agent in the summer… Willian would prefer to sign a new Chelsea deal than move to Barcelona… Barcelona were offered Napoli veteran Fernando Llorente… Chelsea will look to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in the summer.
