Transfer gossip: Real Madrid plan Erling Haaland swoop as part of double raid on Man City

Erling Haaland in action for Manchester City.

First Real Madrid will come for Joao Cancelo. Then they’ll be back for Erling Haaland, apparently. Also: Newcastle are going on a Fox hunt, and Barca will be back for a Wolves star…

‘Madrid, to the assault of City’ is the headline as AS describes Real’s plan to pick off some of Pep Guardiola’ s best players.

First, the Spaniards want to take Joao Cancelo. Real have been aware of the Portugal star’s quality since his spell at Valencia and the European champions plan to make a move next summer, apparently in ‘an operation with a maximum cost of 40 to 50 million euros’. Christ knows what the pound will be worth by then, assuming it’s still a thing, but that still seems ambitious on Real’s part. They appear to banking on Cancelo pushing for the move.

The following year, Real plan to pinch Erling Haaland. The Norwegian goal machine visited Real as part of his European tour when picking his next club before he decided on City. Haaland didn’t want to compete with Karim Benzema, but in 2024, the starting spot would be exclusively his.

Real know full well that after two seasons at City a clause comes into effect worth 180million euros – ‘ a high but reasonable amount for an insatiable scorer’. Real can afford it as they are said to have squirrelled away 425million euros ‘thanks to good savings management’.

Man Utd failed to make seven-club Haaland shortlist as points-based system revealed

Barcelona have funded their transfer activity through other, arguably, less sustainable means and the Catalans are making plans for next summer too.

Chief among them is a move for Ruben Neves. The Wolves midfielder was expected to move on this summer, with Barca, Manchester United and Arsenal all eyeing up the Portugal star.

But United went for Casemiro and Arsenal looked elsewhere. It seems Barca were just biding their time, perhaps while they rummaged around the Nou Camp looking for trinkets to sell.

Sport says Barca will move for Neves next summer as they seek a replacement for Sergio Busquets.

Maddison discusses Leicester

Newcastle also parked their interest in James Maddison this summer after Leicester resisted their offers for England’s Pirlo. But the Magpies aren’t finished.

90min says Newcastle will go back to Leicester next summer, intent on taking not only Maddison but also Youri Tielemans.

At that point, Tielemans will almost certainly be a free-agent and able to choose his next club. By then, Leicester might be a Championship club if they don’t arrest their current form which, presumably, would render futile their attempts to tie Maddison down to a new deal.

The playmaker’s current terms run to 2024. Should a renewal remain unsigned, Newcastle would hope to sign Maddison for less than the £50million Leicester wanted during the summer.
