SPURS TARGET HORNETS STOPPER
Having become the first keeper since seemingly the dawn of time to shut out Liverpool, Ben Foster finds himself a wanted man.
The Sun says Tottenham have registered their interest in the 36-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer. Apparently, Jose Mourinho wants the Watford keeper to provide some genuine competition for Hugo Lloris, who has struggled with a dip in form and injuries since lifting the World Cup for France in 2018.
Foster can pick his club at the end of the season – he is already free to discuss a move with foreign sides – but it would take a shift in his mindset to swap his place in the Watford XI for a battle with Lloris at Spurs and the added scrutiny a move to White Hart Lane might bring. Foster has spoken a number of times about how content he is out of the spotlight which blighted his Manchester United career and he enjoys the quiet life away from football.
Anyway, Mourinho has more pressing matters to deal with concerning his defence…
JOSE EYES MAN UTD CENTRE-BACK
We saw on Sunday how dissatisfied the Spurs boss is with his defenders. He explained away Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld’s omissions by saying he opted for two faster players either side of Eric Dier, who is more used to bringing the ball forward. It didn’t work.
So this morning, Calcio Mercato brings us fresh links with Spurs and Chris Smalling. The Manchester United centre-back is currently rebuilding his reputation at Roma, who also want to sign him on a permanent deal. But United want £20million, which Spurs are in a better position to pay.
Tbe idea of Mourinho signing any of United’s centre-backs seems far-fetched since he clearly thought so little of them during his reign at Old Trafford. Those he inherited, he tried to replace; those he bought, he didn’t trust.
RED DEVILS STILL KEEN ON STOKE STARLET
United’s central defensive problem has been half solved with the acquisition of Harry Maguire. But the feeling remains that the captain could do with a better calibre of partner.
Reports in Italy suggest they are close to the head of the queue to sign Kalidou Koulibaly, who is apparently up for grabs for £85million. Sky Sports, though, suggests United might shop at the other end of the market…
The Red Devils have been linked before with Nathan Collins and whispers around the Stoke teenager won’t go away. Collins made his first start for the Potters last week and it is said that United scouts are watching him extremely closely with a view to a move in the summer.
AND THE REST
