Gossip: Werner to Liverpool explained, Kane to Man Utd…

Date published: Thursday 5th March 2020 9:02

This has been discussed for some time now but The Athletic’s James Pearce has reiterated that Timo Werner (the hottest young goalscorer in Europe who is not Erling Haaland) is high on Liverpool’s list of transfer targets this summer? And why? Because Divock Origi has turned really very sh*t and Sadio Mane and Mo Salah will be playing in the Africa Cup of Nations next season.

‘The drop-off in quality between Liverpool’s first-choice front three and the back-up options is far too great,’ wrote Pearce in a Q and A. Yes, we saw that in Tuesday’s defeat to Chelsea when Mane looked like literally the only player capable of scoring.

‘Tottenham striker Harry Kane would consider a move to Manchester United this summer, Goal has learned, as he would prefer not to stay at Spurs while they undergo an extensive rebuild.’ Now this has been written by a Manchester United fan so we take that with a massive pinch of salt, but it probably makes sense that Kane would prefer not to wait two or three years for Spurs to get better again.

Now whether he would go to United is another question. Can you imagine him playing in the Premier League against Tottenham? Surely the smart money is on a move to Real Madrid, though whether they would pay £150m is another matter indeed.

OPINION: Harry Kane might want a big move, but does a big move want him?

‘Arsenal could offer John Stones an escape route from Manchester City in the summer with Pep Guardiola’s side willing to sanction the sale of the centre-back,’ says here in 90 min. Now this makes sense on a few levels: Arsenal need a centre-half, Mikel Arteta knows Stones very well and City would probably sell the England man after he failed to establish himself even in the absence of just about every other centre-back at City this season. But the fact that it makes so much sense makes us think it might be a guess. Cynical b***ards that we are.

The price? Well the suggestion is that City would want their full £50m, which might well rule out Arsenal and their dwindling resources.
