Tyrell Malacia says Erik ten Hag has told him he wants to implement a specific tactic the full-back is used to from his time with Feyenoord.

Malacia made a £13.5m switch to Old Trafford this summer from Feyenoord having come through the youth ranks with the Dutch side.

The left-back made 136 appearances for the Eredivisie side, contributing four goals and ten assists.

He was Ten Hag’s first signing at the Red Devils helm and Malacia told Sky Sports that his conversations with the Dutch boss were key to him joining the club.

Malacia said: “I spoke to him a lot, two or three times. We had some good conversations about football, about myself and about him.

“Also about how he sees me which was an important thing for me in joining the club.”

The 22-year-old made his first start for United in the 3-1 preseason win over Crystal Palace in Melbourne, in which he moved forward into midfield when his side were in possession.

And Malacia, when asked whether Ten Hag wants him to act as an extra midfielder in the United system, confirmed that was the case.

He added: “Yeah, that’s what the coach wants from me and at my former club, I played the same style so for me it’s easier to fit into this system.”

On joining United, Malacia said: “It’s an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager [Erik ten Hag] leading us.

“I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.

“Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt. I’ll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family.

“None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for them. Now I’m ready to focus on the future with United, and help my new club achieve success.”
