Adam Lallana received a straight red card for a bizarre and unacceptable reaction to a challenge in a game for Liverpool’s Under 23s on Monday.
Lallana was continuing his recovery from a thigh injury which has restricted him to just two first-team starts this season.
The midfielder started against Tottenham’s Under 23s on Monday but was dismissed after reacting angrily to a challenge from George Marsh.
Lallana lost a header to Marsh, and the Liverpool midfielder felt the youngster had led with his arm.

Lallana then grabbed Marsh around the neck, and was instantly sent off for violent conduct.
Liverpool finished the game with nine men after George Johnston was sent off for two yellow cards.
“I’ve never seen Adam react like that,” said Under 23’s manager Neil Critchley.
Lallana’s ban will count only for Under 23 game as opposed to first team ones.
