New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is unhappy with Willian’s late return to the club after the World Cup and will seek immediate talks with the midfielder, who has been linked with a £65m move to Real Madrid.
Willian was due to report back from his post-World Cup holiday on Friday, but a problem with his passport delayed his arrival in London until Wednesday, by which time the first team squad were in Dublin for the International Champions Cup game with Arsenal – a game which was an interesting one for gamblers using UK betting sites.
The Brazil star’s passport had apparently run out of space, and this was what had delayed his return to London. Chelsea, channelling their inner Morrissey, insist it was really nothing. Sarri, though, seems less satisfied with what he called a “strange” situation.
“I want to speak to him before I answer these questions,” said Sarri. “I am not happy about this situation but, before I answer, I would like to speak to him.”
Sarri has a busy schedule, as he also needs to speak to Belgian duo Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard. They too have been strongly linked with moves to Madrid and neither has signed the new contracts Chelsea have offered.
“I will see them on Saturday for the first time – I don’t know the situation,” said Sarri. “We are talking about top players. Every club wants to keep their top players and we are trying to do it.”
It’s not all bad news, though. Once the nonsense of pre-season is out of the way, Chelsea and Sarri really could be a match made in heaven and you can read all about why here.
