Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has claimed that Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero are the toughest opponents he has faced.
The Dutch centre-back was linked with a move to Anfield and the Etihad for much of the summer and even handed in a transfer request to try and force a move away from St Mary’s.
However, no transfer materialised and he has been reintegrated back into the Southampton first-team picture, with his first Premier League appearance of the season coming as a substitute against Crystal Palace almost a fortnight ago.
Van Dijk revealed that Sturridge and Aguero were the trickiest opponents he has faced in the Premier League when asked on Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube channel at the UK launch of FIFA 18.
“I think Sturridge when he is fit. He’s a great striker. I think Aguero is also an amazing striker – small, quick,” Van Dijk told Rio Ferdinand at the FIFA 18 UK launch.
And in another interview, Van Dijk picked out City and the Reds again, but this time as the two English clubs likely to go the furthest in the Champions League this campaign.
“I think Liverpool and Manchester City maybe,” he said to Squawka.
“You never know. It’s always going to be difficult and [it’s] a different style of play – European nights are always different.
“Anything can happen, especially if you are the big English clubs who are in the Champions League at the moment.”
