Van Gaal’s United job safe until summer – reports

Well, that win over Shrewsbury on Monday night must really have impressed Manchester United’s hierarchy.

The conventional wisdom is that Louis van Gaal would be sacked by Manchester United when/if United were mathematically incapable of qualifying for the Champions League, exactly as with David Moyes.

However, the Daily Mirror claim that Van Gaal will last until the summer, with Jose Mourinho not wanting to take the job in mid-season.

Mourinho would prefer to take the job in June, as he did at Stamford Bridge in 2013. That gives him time to overhaul his squad and oversee an entire preseason campaign without the problems of limping to the end of the current campaign.

Of course, that doesn’t have to mean Van Gaal stays, if Ryan Giggs is prepared to take the job on a caretaker basis. We’ve heard plenty enough leaks from Giggs’ camp to suggest that he does not want a gig he is fortunate to be in consideration for.

This may indicate a stay of execution for Van Gaal, but no more than that. Whatever happens, he’s off in the summer. Get ready for Pep vs Jose in Manchester.
