Raphael Varane has completed his Manchester United medical ahead of his transfer from Real Madrid.

At this stage, only the finer details on contract terms are to be finalised before an announcement arrives in the coming days, according to The Athletic.

Varane arrived at Carrington on Tuesday for some fitness checks, completing the rest on Wednesday.

United are aiming to iron out the rest of the paperwork for the deal before confirming the signing before the weekend, but not on Wednesday.

The Red Devils confirmed that an agreement had been reached for the transfer over two weeks ago.

The deal is reportedly worth £34million rising to £42million with add-ons.

Varane will partner Harry Maguire in the centre of United’s defence and is an excellent addition for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 28-year-old joined Madrid in 2011 from RC Lens for around £10m.

Varane made 360 appearances for the Spanish giants, winning the Champions League and Club World Cup four times and LaLiga three times.

He was also an integral part of the France squad that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

When asked about the signing of Varane, Solskjaer said: “Of course, very happy that we’ve managed to get a deal with Real Madrid.

“First of all the club shows ambition with one of the most exciting young players in world football, then one of the most respected centre-backs.

“We have different ways of playing with Raphael. I can’t wait to get him in, hopefully we can get that sorted as soon as.

“We’ve scrambled before towards the end of the window and now I have to say we’re in a good position.”

Varane will unlikely feature against Leeds United in the Reds’ Premier League opener on Saturday.

However, The Sun claims United will start fellow new signing Jadon Sancho ‘alongside Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes – behind frontman Anthony Martial’.

Sancho ‘kept himself fit with his own training regime during an extended break following Euro 2020’, according to the report.

The England international joined the club in July from Borussia Dortmund for £73m after contributing 37 goals and 41 assists over the last three seasons in the Bundesliga.

On completing the deal, Sancho told the club’s official website in July: “I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day.”
