New Arsenal signing Fabio Vieira celebrates

Fabio Vieira has promised Arsenal fans that he will “work, work, work” after he agreed to join the Premier League club from Porto.

The Portuguese club confirmed in a statement on Friday that Vieira would be moving to the Gunners after the clubs agreed a fee of €35m plus €5m in add-ons.

It read: “The club informs the market that it has reached an agreement with Arsenal FC for the signing, on a permanent basis, of Fabio Vieira for the amount of 40million Euros.”

The midfielder was Player of the Tournament at last year’s Under-21 European Championship and followed that up with a great season for Porto, contributing six goals and 14 assists in 27 appearances, of which only 15 of those were starts.

And now Vieira has admitted that adjusting to the Premier League “won’t be easy” but he’s vowed to give his all to be successful at Arsenal.

Vieira told the Daily Mirror: “I was always happy at Porto but this chance is important for any professional. I have always watched the Premier League on TV.

“Playing in the Premier League won’t be easy and I promise only to work, work, work.

“My agent worked on the deal between the two clubs and I accepted the deal because it was important for all parties.”

There have been reports that Arsenal could still back the Vieira deal up with a move for Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans and former Premier League striker Noel Whelan thinks they could replace Granit Xhaka with the Belgium international.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think that’s the competition that Xhaka is looking at as well, isn’t he? They’re looking at that more complete midfield player.

“Xhaka is one that is very combative in midfield, he can put his foot in but so can Youri Tielemans. When you’re looking at a player, how many goals has Youri Tielemans scored in the Premier League? What effect does he have from set-pieces? He tops Xhaka, no doubt.

“I think that is the difference there, I think that’s the competition that you’re looking at, is Tielemans for Xhaka.

“I would love to see Youri Tielemans at Arsenal, I think he would thrive. There was talk about him going to Liverpool as well.

“Arsenal are now looking at certain players and positions in their side that I believe needed strengthening. They’ve done the centre-halves, which people were begging for. Not just for one year but for probably about seven.

“They’ve got those boxes and those jigsaw pieces fitted in. I think that one piece now is that midfield and I think it is Youri Tielemans. He could take a great step from Leicester. He’s been fantastic there but I would love to see him in an Arsenal shirt and see what effect he has on that team.”
