Aston Villa have announced the club-record signing of striker Wesley Moraes, pending international clearance.
Wesley scored 17 goals in all competitions for Club Brugge last season, earning admiring glances from Arsenal.
But the forward has reportedly signed a five-year deal with newly-promoted Aston Villa, replacing Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham in the process.
Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws says Wesley will cost Villa £23million – more than the £18m they set aside to sign Darren Bent in 2011.
The Brazilian forward’s move is still pending international clearance, as Villa were unable to get him a work-permit.
But the high fee, combined with the fact he has scored in the Champions League, means that is almost certain.
Most recently, Newcastle United had registered their interest but uncertainty over Rafa Benitez’s future, plus the club’s potential takeover, scuppered their chances of a deal.
Villa’s deal to sign Wesley will be the highest transfer fee ever received by a team in the Belgian top flight.
