‘Extra ten goals a season’ – Ward-Prowse to Spurs would be enough for Kane to stay, says pundit
The signing of Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse would convince Harry Kane to extend his Tottenham contract, according to Darren Ambrose.
Kane is out of contract in 2024 and there are growing fears he could leave this summer, or as a free agent in 16 months.
Bayern Munich remain linked with the England captain having sold Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona last summer.
Kane is yet to win a trophy in his career and a move to the German champions would make silverware a foregone conclusion.
However, he is closing in on Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goal scoring record and will probably want to remain in England for that reason alone.
It remains to be seen whether or not the 29-year-old will decide to break the record, but not win any trophies, as a Tottenham player, or break the record, and win trophies, with a team like Manchester United or Chelsea.
The England striker tried to force a move to Manchester City in the 2021 summer transfer window, but Pep Guardiola’s side would not pay Spurs’ asking price and then signed Erling Haaland last year, meaning they are very unlikely to go back in for Kane.
Haaland has been outstanding since joining City from Borussia Dortmund; however, Ambrose insists he would take Kane over the Norweigan striker and United’s in-form forward Marcus Rashford.
“I was asked who would you take right now, Haaland, Rashford or Kane?” Ambrose told talkSPORT.
“I’m maybe being a little bit biased as a Spurs supporter but I’m still taking Kane to lead the line for me.
“I think in terms of a football player, he’s the best out of all three of those.
“Harry Kane’s goals are incredible, and his assists, his all-round play is remarkable.”
As mentioned prior, a move to Old Trafford could make perfect sense for the Spurs talisman.
Gary Neville believes that United is “the most likely” move for Kane if he is to remain in England.
It is hard to disagree with him given their desire to sign a striker in the summer transfer window.
A Spurs departure could be on the cards, especially if Antonio Conte departs at the end of the season, but Ambrose believes the signing of Ward-Prowse would be enough to convince Kane to stay.
If Kane does need convincing to stay, it will need to be a huge statement that puts Spurs in a strong position to win a trophy and makes them title contenders at the same time, I feel.
Would Ward-Prowse do that? Absolutely not.
He is a good player, but he is not a world-class midfielder that would come in and transform Spurs’ fortunes, with all due respect.
TalkSPORT correspondent Alex Crook believes Ward-Prowse is not on the same level as Declan Rice and is probably worth £50million.
And Ambrose – a Spurs fan – believes Ward-Prowse would be a “perfect” signing for Conte’s side.
“I’d take him at Spurs for £50m,” Ambrose said. “I think he’s the perfect player that Spurs need that goes from defence to attack.
“And he can be that link to the play and I think you’ve got the players that will do the dirty work – the dog work – in terms of [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg and [Oliver] Skipp and players like that.
“I think he’s fantastic. Listen, you sign James Ward-Prowse, Harry Kane stays.
“That’s an extra ten goals a season for him with his deliveries.”
Ward-Prowse has spent his whole career with the south coast club and has now racked up 395 first-team appearances.
The 28-year-old is closing in on David Beckham’s record of the most free-kicks scored in the Premier League. He currently has 17, in comparison to Beckham’s 18.
