Arsene Wenger has heaped praise upon France star N’Golo Kante, labelling him “one of the most influential midfielders I’ve seen play football”.
Former Arsenal boss Wenger was discussing Kante after watching the midfielder boss France’s midfield during their 2-1 win over Australia in their World Cup opener.
Wenger admitted he tried twice to sign the 27-year-old for Arsenal before Kante moved to Leicester and then on to Chelsea, winning the Premier League title with both clubs.
“He is one of the most influential midfielders I’ve seen play football,” Wenger told beIN Sports. “He constantly makes simple decisions and never overcomplicates it.
“Have I looked to sign Kante? Yes. When he was in France and when he was at Leicester.
“I cannot explain everything but it is quite obvious when you look at where he has gone.
“Was it the money? I do not want to talk about that. Transfers are transfers – you cannot explain absolutely everything.”
