Wenger: ‘People forget that Ozil is a fighter’

Arsene Wenger has piled the praise on Mesut Ozil for his recent Arsenal form.

Arsenal have a raft of first-team injuries, but Ozil’s fine performances are offsetting many of the problems within the squad. The German has 13 assists in the league alone, on track to break the Premier League record.

Ozil has had to deal with regular criticism since arriving in England – you know who from. That’s despite him being one of the finest attacking midfielders in world football.

“Ozil is the main provider in our team and in the league,” said Wenger.

“He has 13 assists in the league. Players who can make you score are very difficult to find and have something special on the vision front and on the technical quality.”

Wenger also made a point of praising Ozil’s effort and determination, two characteristics that have been criticised during his time in England.

“That is what Mesut is about. But he is also about, and people forget this many times, in his way [he is] an exceptional fighter. He runs much more and covers the distances during the game.

“He has added runs into the box now. You watch how many times he’s in the box compared to what he did before. I think he has become an absolutely unbelievable player.”
