Arsene Wenger has stated that Arsenal will start the upcoming season with a back three in defence.

The Gunners ended this past campaign on a high note, winning the FA Cup and almost rescuing Champions League qualification after a slump in the middle of the season.

Rob Holding particularly impressed as part of a defensive three, with Per Mertesacker starring in the FA Cup final.

Arsenal open their Premier League campaign with a game against Leicester on Friday(!), August 11, and Wenger says that the club will look to maintain their confidence and momentum with the same system.

“We’ll test many systems. At the moment, in pre-season, we are in the continuity of the end of last season,” he told the club’s official website.

“In some games, we will play with four at the back and some with three, but at the start of the season we will certainly play with three.”
